Internship report(Giorgio)

当研究室でのインターンシップを終えたGiorgioさんから、レポートが届きました!6月から9月までの約4ヶ月間、お疲れ様でした。
We have received a report from Giorgio who has completed his internship in our lab! Thank you very much for your hard work over the four months from June to September.

I recently completed my internship at Ohmori Group from June to September. It is still almost unbelievable that what started as a simple Google search became one of the best summers of my life.
In the lab, I worked on the Quantum Computer team, where I was responsible for atom rearrangement. Having almost no experience in a research lab before, I was able to learn a lot there: cold atom physics, lasers, working with RF signals and amplifiers, building an optical setup, soldering and much more. I’m thus grateful to my 4G teammates, who welcomed me into the office and eventually became my friends. In addition to that, the working environment in the group was so wonderful that it felt like home, with everyone being extremely supportive and available for help.

However, not all things I learned were related to physics. Living in Japan allowed me to truly understand the country, which is something that I could not do when I visited as a tourist before. In those few months I learned some Japanese, sang in karaoke, watched fireworks (hanabi) from the rooftop, participated in a traditional flowing noodle (nagashi-somen) party, received
souvenirs (omiyage) from colleagues and even became an Okazaemon fan.

Being a travel enthusiast, I could not resist from exploring the area around Okazaki, which is strategically placed in the middle of Japan. Within a few hours it’s possible to go from the chaos of big cities like Nagoya, Kyoto and Osaka to the quiet woods in Aichi prefecture and to the high peaks of the Japanese alps in Nagano and Gifu. And how can I not mention the food! Sushi, ramen, soba, udon, onigiri, tonkatsu, gyoza, yakiniku, shabu-shabu, bento boxes… It’s simply impossible not to enjoy Japanese cuisine!

I wholeheartedly recommend doing an internship here to everyone. This experience helped me gain insights on research and strengthen my passion for quantum computing and cold atom physics, but also immerse myself in a new reality, culture and daily life.
I would like to thank everyone that I got to know at Ohmori Group—such wonderful people who supported me throughout my entire journey!
