Business Trip Report (KAIST, Mathis)

当研究室のインターン生Mathisさんが、6/5~6/7に韓国科学技術院 (KAIST)のJaewook Ahn研究室を訪問しました。その様子がわかるレポートがMathisさんから届きましたので、どうぞご覧ください!
Mathis, an internship student of our lab, visited Jaewook Ahn’s lab in Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), from June 5 to 7. We have received a report from Mathis, so please take a look!

In early June, a small group from the lab composed of Dr. Chew, Dr. Lienhard and intern students Axel Leriche and Mathis Roussel went to KAIST (Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology), more specifically to Prof. Jaewook Ahn’s Quantum Computing Lab to meet with the team and learn from their projects and their achievements.

Jaewook Ahn’s team was precursor in the field of throwing cold Rubidium atoms using accelerating and decelerating optical tweezers, letting them fly freely in between (meaning that the tweezer is turned off). In a bid to emulate this work and use it for its own purposes, the Ohmori group has also decided to explore this field in order to achieve and study such a feat: this is the project of Axel and Mathis, master students staying for a summer internship with us.

As such, the visit was rich with new leads to improve our experiments and our processes. During the two days we spent in the Jaewook Ahn’s lab, we could spend a lot of time discussing with the students there, Dr. Andrew Byun, Hansub Hwang, Sunhwa Hwang,… about their work and ours. It was very exciting to ask questions to those who had performed the throw and catch experiment we were aiming at but also to discuss new research topics to explore together such as adiabatic transport or throw and catch processes in quantum computing. We also had the pleasure to talk deeply with Prof. Ahn about his take on research both in general and in Quantum Sciences. We would like to express our deepest thanks to Prof. Ahm for his warm and enlightening welcome in his lab.

Our time was also very pleasant out of the lab: we had the opportunity to discover with the students of Prof. Ahn’s team typical Korean food such as Jjajangmyeon (Black Bean Noodles). We enjoyed taking the French-made train from Daejeon to Seoul where we, at last, spent a few very nice hours before our flight back home.

Once again, we would like to express our gratitude towards Prof. Ahn but also towards the travel team for their essential support, and towards Dr. Sylvain de Léséleuc who offered us the opportunity to go there.

감사합니다!
