Internship Report (Martin)

当研究室でのインターンシップを終えたMartinさんから、レポートが届きました!4月から7月までの約3か月間、お疲れ様でした。当研究室で過ごした様子や、初めての日本訪問について書かれていますので、是非ご覧ください!
We have received a report from Martin who has completed his internship in our lab.Thank you very much for your hard work over the three months from April to July. Please take a look at his report on how he spent his time at our laboratory and his first visit to Japan!

I was very lucky to be accepted in Ohmori group after having contacted Assistant professor Sylvain De Léséleuc via e-mail. My internship took place between April and July 2023, four months during which I delved into neutral atoms experiments for the very first time.

My work in the lab was focused on a key element of the 3G setup : the spatial light modulator. A tiny surface that encrypts an arbitrary phase pattern on any incoming laser beam allowing us to draw any desired picture with a light ray pencil. I designed an automatic optimization routine that improves the ‘precision’ with which the traps are designed allowing us to better control the rubidium atoms properties. Having obtained some preliminary results, I was fortunate to go to the USA to present some of them with fellow master student Tom and assistant Prof. Sylvain-San. This took place at the DAMOP 2023 international conference in Spokane, Washington. During the conference I was both able to discuss my results with different researchers from all around the world as well as discover what they were doing. Presenting my results to such an highly skilled audience got me some highly relevant questions I had never asked my self, allowing me to explore new research paths in the following months. One particularity of Ohmori group I particularly enjoyed is the emphasis that is put on learning. Each week during the group meeting and an electronic or python club you are introduced to new concepts essential to cold atoms experiments. I thus had the opportunity to present several scientific articles as well as my own work during the Japanese tweezers workshop that now takes place each year. This is a great way to reflect on the every day scientific work as well as learning to present to a very skilled audience.

This was also my very first visit to Japan and I was able to visit most of Honshu during the Weekends and the Golden week. To be able to both deep dive into a fascinating scientific experiment at the very edge of what is currently possible and discover the unique Japanese way of life made this internship an extraordinary experience !
